The nonprofit Powerhouse Environmental Arts Foundation is planning to redevelop the severely dilapidated six-story former MTA power station known as Batcave, located at 340 Third Avenue, between First and Second streets, in Gowanus. The project will be renamed Powerhouse Workshop and will feature modern office and manufacturing space for artists and builders. There will also be exhibition space, the New York Times reported.
Herzog & de Meuron is designing the project. The structure will receive significant structural and aesthetic work, although original elements will be largely preserved and restored. A rendering also depicts a large expansion on the original structure’s northern side. Opening is planned in 2020.
